Destiny 2, and the Fall of Bungie

Introduction

I remember the first time I came across Bungie. It was many years ago when I found  Halo 2 at garage sale. That iconic cover art, with Master Chief holding his dual-wielding SMGs with burning city behind him and the Halo 2 title above him. It lured me into the franchise, and I fell in love with it after the first shootout. While it’s first-person shooter mechanics were amazing and revolutionary for the time, the main thing I quickly became a huge fan of was the story. This series is very famous for it’s compelling story, and rightfully so.

Right after finishing this masterpiece, I went to GameStop and bought a copy of Halo: Combat Evolved, and from then onward, I fell in love with the Halo Franchise. This series was made by developers who cared and who wanted to make a fantastic universe. Great writers, great composers, great programmers, and phenomenal artists. This company was on a highway to success, and I was proud to be a part of it. I’ve been a fan of Bungie for years, and I’ve seen them grow and develop with their titles. Then they left Microsoft, and everything changed.

When Destiny came out back in 2014, it was the first sign of trouble for Bungie. When the writer left the project early and several aspects of the story were missing. There was also the issue of there being no end game, and when they started wrapping things up with Destiny 1, there’s just no reason to continue playing. There were many problems with Destiny 1, and Destiny 2 was supposed to be the game that fixed everything. It was supposed to be the one game that made Destiny a better and brighter franchise, and it was supposed to the game that would bring everyone back.

It came out last year … and was somehow WORSE than Destiny 2. The story was worse, the writing was worse, mechanics from the first game were gone, Eververse became even more greedy than it was in D1, and much of the fantastic lore that was in D1 was practically retconned. It was a disaster, and as the DLC’s rolled out, it got worse, and worse. I’ve told you guys that I would be making my final post about Destiny 2 when the DLC II dropped, and that I would be giving my thoughts on it.

I was hoping to give you guys good news, but you and I both where this is unfortunately going. The DLC II was terrible, and Destiny 2 is no longer worth my time. I’m done with the Destiny Franchise. I’m done with Bungie, and this is my final goodbye to them.

Copy & Paste

That’s what this DLC was. It was a copy and paste of the shit that we’ve been seeing over and over again throughout the entire life cycle of Destiny 2. Same bullshit Hive that we’ve fought before, but this time, they’re covered in fucking snow. Wonderful. How original Bungie. Oh, wait hold on, there are new enemies there’s … Hive Knights that have a shield now … that you can break. Oh oh, and there’s Hive Acolytes with snipers … that are basically Hobgoblins from the Vex … oh, and … all the other “new enemies” are basically the same old Hive … just named differently.

Also, apparently this “species of Hive” is rare … and only exists on the Polar Ice Cap of Mars … for … some reason. This is never explained why. At least for not as far as I got before I gave up and deleted the game.

Another thing that’s copied & pasted is what I’d like to call “The Destiny Campaign Level Formula”, and it goes as follows. Step 1, player cut scene and briefly introduce characters and plot. Step 2, spawn player in visually breath taking environment. Step 3, when player spawns, play more dialogue that explains what the player needs to do. Step 4, after less than two minutes of walking down a boring path, introduce the players to the “new enemy” type by creating a combat scenario. Step 5, more dialogue after the combat scenario. Step 6, have the player face one/more than one big boss with many mobs the player has to defeat. Step 7, dialogue/cut scene before finishing mission. That was the entirety of the first mission, and it was fucking boring.

This has been every mission ever in every Destiny game … E V E R.

The “A C T I N G”

Sucks. It’s god awful. Whoever they hired to voice Anastasia Bray is the absolute worst at acting. She sounds like she’s fourteen using an iPhone 5 to record her lines. She doesn’t sound convincing in any words she says. The beginning part of this game actually made me quit. Nothing hooked me in. Which is the one thing you NEED to have with every story you write. You need to have a good HOOK, and Bungie, you fucked up bad on this one … again!

Zavala also is in this one … oof, his acting. His acting is similar to everyone else’s acting in the entire game … they’re all terrible. Nobody sounds convincing in any words they say or any actions they do. The only character I like (and everyone will agree) is Cayde-6. He at least sounds real in his words. The writing for his character is well done. However, everyone else sounds either cliché or forced in their dialogue.

Everything Wrong With Eververse

It’s greedy. It’s manipulative. There’s nothing more to be said. You wish to hear more about it, simply go look it up. The only real thing to discuss is the new system they added to make it more … “fair” for players who wish to play the game in order to earn rewards with paying money. I say “fair” in quotations because they can only earn one thing, once a week, and can only earn more … by spending more money. It’s fucking dumb.

Bungie Doesn’t Care Anymore

From what I’ve heard from many people still playing Destiny 2, this is just the same song and dance we’ve seen and heard before, but this time, with a different texture. At this point, I firmly believe that this company doesn’t care about Destiny, nor do they care about the fans who wanted to see this game grow and develop. It’s sad, but I’m afraid this is the reality. The Bungie I knew from my childhood would’ve NEVER allowed this kind of insanity to happen. They would’ve started from scratch again and again until they truly got it right.

I believe that many things happened after they left Microsoft. I believe several key developers left or were fired during the transition to Activision, and these new corporate folks came in and took over. When that happened, everything began on a quick and swift decline. The Destiny series went from bad to worse with Destiny 2, and instead of addressing the problem and being transparent with their consumers, Bungie continued doing sketchy stuff. Throttling XP gains, retconning the many great back stories of the Destiny Lore.

They don’t care anymore.

Goodbye

I’ve all but given up at this point. Destiny 2 has been on a slow decline ever since launch, and well deserved if you ask me. This is a complete repeat of what happened to Destiny 1, and we know what’s going to happen after DLC 2. There’s going to be a “massive DLC” that’ll “bring everybody back” and “fix everything”. I’m sorry, Bungie, but when Activision even considers you’re game a failure, I think it’s time to either start doing your job properly, or don’t do it at all. You’re running out of time, Bungie.

Gamers are moving on to bigger and better things. Warframe is a masterpiece compared to anything you’re doing, and Fortnite and PUBG have taken gaming by storm. There are better games out now. The only thing I’ll hold near and dear to my heart, is the Destiny Lore. The one thing that I loved about the series. Minus the lore of Destiny 2 … that … that lore was shit. So after giving them numerous chances, I’m finally done. This is my final goodbye to Destiny and to Bungie.

Of course, I will continue to observe this from afar and see what happens, but I will no longer interact Destiny with either of their games, because at this point, there is no longer any point to it.

Goodbye, Bungie. It was a good run, but you have truly fallen from grace.

In January 2013, Gabe Newell (the CEO of Valve) during The Nerdist Podcast had been quoted saying this,

“You have to stop thinking that you’re in charge and start thinking that you’re having a dance. We used to think we’re smart […] but nobody is smarter than the internet. […] One of the things we learned pretty early on is ‘Don’t ever, ever try to lie to the internet – because they will catch you. They will de-construct your spin. They will remember everything you ever say for eternity.’

You can see really old school companies really struggle with that. They think they can still be in control of the message. […] So yeah, the internet (in aggregate) is scary smart. The sooner people accept that and start to trust that that’s the case, the better they’re gonna be in interacting with them.”

A quote that reigns true even to this day. This situation almost sounds familiar when being compared to the current situation with Bungie and the fans. Bungie has repeated time and time again that they’re “listening to their fans” and that “there will be changes” and “we’re looking into it”. The same old tune over and over, and the entire Destiny 2 community is sick and tired of it. Bungie needs to stop believing in the false ideology that they’re in charge, start actually doing something about the game’s problems, and stop lying to their consumers at every which way.

In fact, I already know several things you can add to Destiny 2:

  1. Bring Back Random Rolls – They are what made grinding for loot in Destiny 1 actually enjoyable. It meant that any gun had the chance of either being good or being bad. It made you feel special when you got a very good roll on an Imago Loop you just got. It’s what made grinding fun, and it would make grinding great in Destiny 2.
  2. Bring Back Strike Exclusive Loot – Much like my previous suggestion, this was a feature in Destiny 1 that really worked well with grinding for loot. When you got something that is exclusive to a specific to a certain Strike, you felt really damn proud of your self for working so hard for it. That’s something Destiny 2 lacks almost entirely.
  3. LIMIT the Eververse – I really shouldn’t have to be the one to explain this further to you, Bungie. Especially after all the backlash from The Dawning, I would’ve hoped you learned your lesson by now, but clearly not. Eververse has completely enraged the player-base with how difficult it is to get stuff from her. Hell, it’s already been calculated by many reliable sources that it could take players literal YEARS before they unlock everything from the Eververse. Either limit the Eververse to what she can and can not sell, or get rid of her entirely. She has done nothing but anger the community, and it needs to be taken care of.
  4. Get Rid of Tokens – Many people have argued with me about this topic. Claiming tokens are a good thing and that helps keep it fair for people, because people were leveling factions up too fast because … they were grinding for longer periods? Because … apparently that’s unfair to players who can’t spend hours grinding for loot … in an MMORPG? (I will get to this topic later) Anyways, I don’t care about that, and neither do many other Destiny fans. They want to level up their factions directly, not have a bunch of stupid Chuckie Cheese tokens do it.
  5. Give Raids VARIETY – We don’t want to be going to the same exact spot for every single Raid for the next four DLCs. We don’t keep seeing the same Leviathan, the same Calus, or the same Cabal every time we go Raid. Not everyone is on board with a Cabal-themed Raid system. It doesn’t sound fun and exciting like how a Hive Raid sounds, or how a Vex Raid sounds. The Cabal haven’t done anything in magnitude when compared to the Vex or the Hive. Give us new locations, new planets, new raid scenery, and stop giving us reused assets.
  6. Better Writers – When I first played Destiny 2’s campaign, I was blinded by the game’s visuals, music, and set design. They all looked great. However, the story lacked any quality. Hell, I personally thought Ghaul was a weak villain that quickly changed his motives towards the end for … really no reason. I didn’t like the fact that he cared so much about the Traveler either. Remember, the Cabal have been known for destroying planets just for getting in their way. So why would they care about wanting the Traveler? If anything, I feel they would want to destroy it, because it would break humanity’s will to continue fighting, because the Traveler is practically a God praised by humanity. If they saw their God die, that would ultimately break them. Giving a more powerful and emotional message, but Bungie decided FUCK THAT. Instead get cheesy dialogue, cheesy acting, cheesy story telling, and a dumb, cliché ending. Long story short, just get better writers.
  7. Oh, and stop thinking you can lie to the internet – We’re not dumb, Bungie. We aren’t mindless consumers that don’t know when we’re being scammed. For almost four months now, we’ve been calling you out on your blatant lies, and you continue to believe that you’re still in control of the conversation. You aren’t. Day by day, we are catching on to you, and we’re archiving every word you type. Every message you post. Every tweet you make. Every update you announce. We have it all at our finger tips. Ready to use against you. Do not think for one single moment, that you have any power here on the internet.

Follow these seven ideas, Bungie, and you just might be on the right path to success. Probably … maybe … but eh, I know you won’t. You never will.

P.S. After this, I will be releasing one final blog post on Destiny 2. I promise. It will be released after the second DLC has been released. This will be my final judgement on the game, and will possibly my final goodbye to the game. Next post will be something new, don’t worry.

RANT: Bungie thinks making more content for Destiny 2 is “too hard” …

Yes, you heard that correct. The main reason Bungie focuses more on the Eververse and less on the content for the game … is because making the content is just too hard. What the actual fuck? This bullshit excuse comes from Bungie. BUNGIE! The company who would NEVER make dumbass excuses for their mistakes. The company who wouldn’t release their game if they didn’t feel it was fun. The company that wouldn’t allow a deadline to intimidate them. The company who created one of the greatest gaming franchises in history, and this is their fucking excuse.

This was their response to why D2 was in it’s current state:

I think that it (Destiny 2) was made in a relatively short period of time. There was a big reboot of Destiny 2 at some point of early 2016. There had been a previous director who was directing the game before Luke Smith (who’s the current director) took over. So that guy was kind of put aside and Luke Smith took over. I believe that was in April of 2016 but I might be misremembering. Don’t hold me to that exact line. So if you think about it that way then they didn’t really have a ton of time. It had been a 16 months period between the reboot and when the game finally shipped.

And this was their “excuse” to why their main focus is Eververse:

What Bungie decided was we can’t do this any more this is too hard for us to do (referring to releasing a DLC every few months) the tools that we’re working with are really hard to deal with. It’s hard for us to make this much content. It’s just hard to make content in general. And they said we’re going to do a smaller or drip feed of smaller stuff and we’re going to put up the Eververse and make money that way, and Activision said okay. it was a part of their renegotiated deal and they got to a point where they didn’t have to be cranking up so much content.

WOW!! Just … wow, Bungie! The bigger they are, the harder they fall. That couldn’t be more true in this case. Bungie, you made a commitment to your fan base that you would be dedicated to this game for an entire decade. You made a promise, and much like people who make excuses to not exercise, they say it’s too hard. If it’s too hard Bungie, why the hell did you make Destiny? If you feel like you aren’t cut out for it, why don’t you give the license to a company that actually gives a shit. You built a universe that so many people wanted to see grow and thrive, but now you think it’s too hard to make content for your games.

The Man who can Save the Gaming Industry

Since the controversy around Star Wars Battlefront 2 sparked, many gaming companies have been criticized for their implementations of greedy micro-transactions in their triple A titles. Games such as Destiny 2, Overwatch, and even Call of Duty WW2 to name a few. The news on Loot Boxes spread like a wildfire, making it’s way to mainstream media outlets like MSNBC, CNN, Forbes, among others. This news only got bigger with newer information being found by Reddit on these games. Word continued to spread, and it wasn’t long before it caught the attention of worldwide governments.

Belgium, Germany and Australia were the many foreign countries who spoke out against the recent controversy, agreeing that it was a form of gambling to prey on a younger audience or addictive individuals. This eventually leading us to Hawaii Representative, Chris Lee, the man who has spoken out against the Battlefront 2 scandal, and has demanded for the immediate regulation of Loot Boxes in gaming. This is the man I believe will have the power to save the Gaming Industry.

I know what many of you will say; “Government regulation in the gaming industry could lead to it’s demise”, and to an extent, I can agree. I hate government regulations as much as the next guy. However, I honestly feel like we’re being left with no other option. We either continue to allow gaming companies get away with these greedy tactics against consumers, or we leave them with no choice but to face the wrath of Big Brother. We’d be trading one villain for another, but we would also be regulating a practice in gaming that has infested the industry with it’s bullshit.

As of right now, Chris Lee as successfully gotten the support from five other states across the United States, and more support for his cause continues to grow. This move (regardless of how you feel about it) is very important to the future of the gaming community. No matter how you feel on the subject, this is an important fight that all gamers should take part in.
